Cyanide is a naturally occurrg chemical that is found low concentrations throughout nature cludg fruits, nuts, plants, and sects. It has been used by the mg dustry to separate gold and silver particles from ore for over 120 years.
Sce cyanide reacts with the gold and silver, it is consumed durg leachg. The cyanide can and will also react with other undesirable metals and is essentially wasted. Therefore, if excess cyanide is not added to the leach circuit, the amount of available or free cyanide’ decreases, limitg gold and silver dissolution.
Cyanide is used the process of separatg the gold and silver particles from the ore. These reactions are used to safely (or as safely as possible) remove the particles from the ore. The cyanide mixes with the ground up ore and gold/silver and the cyanide easily reacts and separates the two.
Silver is extracted from the ore-argentite (Ag2S). The process of extraction of silver is called as cyanide process as sodium cyanide solution is used. The ore is crushed, concentrated and then treated with sodium cyanide solution. This reaction forms sodium argento cyanide Na[Ag(CN)2].
